Bye Bye BGB?
International Conference on the Harmonization of European Contract Law, October 28th - 30th, 2005
Lecture 7
Academic Initiatives for Further Harmonisation I: Introduction
Prof. Dr. Christina Ramberg, Gothenburg University
Lecture description
This presentation aims at giving an overview over the academic initiatives jurists all over Europe have taken in order to approach the question of the harmonisation of European private law in general, and of European Contract Law in particular. The speaker will describe the activities of the various groups of scholars conducting legal research in this area, starting with Ole Lando’s famous “Principles on European Contract Law”. She will focus on the aims pursued by the different academic groups (Principles? Restatements? Model laws?) as well as their working methods and structure. Besides, the speaker will address other questions of interest, e.g. how the groups finance their researching activity. Finally, the lecture will also mention the relationship between the various groups – in how far do they cooperate, in how far do they see each other as rivals? The lecture will close with an outlook on the future, addressing the question to what extent the current scholary initiatives can contribute to a European Civil Code, which may come into force one day.
