Prof. Dr. Dr. Pierre Legrand

A graduate of McGill University, the University of Oxford, and the Sorbonne, Professor Dr. Dr. Pierre Legrand teaches law at the Sorbonne where he acts as director of the postgraduate programme in comparative legal studies. He also teaches as Visiting Professor at the University of San Diego Law School and as Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne Law School. Prior to settling in France, Professor Legrand, a Canadian, taught for twelve years in Canada, England, and the Netherlands. In the course of his academic career, Professor Legrand has lectured in more than fifteen countries and held visiting professorships at various universities including Toronto, Uppsala, and Cambridge. He has also been a visiting fellow at the Max-Planck Institute in Hamburg. Professor Legrand publishes in English and French. His work has also appeared in other languages. Professor Legrand teaches and writes in the field of comparative legal studies with specific reference to salient theoretical issues arising from comparative interventions. Recent representative publications include a co-edited collection, "Comparative Legal Studies: Traditions and Transitions" (Cambridge University Press, 2003) and contributions to "Nation, Language, and the Ethics of Translation" (Princeton University Press, 2005) and "Themes in Comparative Law: In Honour of Bernard Rudden" (Oxford University Press, 2002). Professor Legrand will be acting as Distinguished Visitor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 2005-2006.

Prof. Dr. Dr. Pierre Legrand will take part as speaker on the panel at the  public panel discussion "A European Civil Code - Utopia or Possibility?"
